Historic Trades Activity – The Miller and Ti-Jo
How was flour produced before the industrial era? How did people keep food cool before the invention of refrigerators?
This summer, travel back in time and discover the answers to these questions alongside two historical characters looking for new apprentices to help them with their work.
Meet Jeanne Dumoulin, the Miller’s Daughter
Jeanne Dumoulin takes you to Île Jésus in 1820. As the daughter of a miller, she has been helping her father operate the mill for many years—a responsibility that was quite unusual for a young woman of her time, and one she takes great pride in. With her wedding only a few weeks away, Jeanne must now find someone to take over her duties. Do you have what it takes to succeed? Test your skills through a series of challenges involving gears, grain, and flour, and discover the fascinating world of traditional milling.
Meet Ti-Jos Connaissant, a True Jack-of-All-Trades
Joseph Connaissant, better known as Ti-Jos, earns his living as a labourer in the 1920s. His work changes with the seasons and takes him wherever help is needed. From cutting wood and harvesting ice to countless other tasks, this hardworking jack-of-all-trades always has something to do—and could certainly use a helping hand! Will you be able to identify the tools of his era and complete the challenges he has prepared for you?
These highly interactive activities invite visitors of all ages to experiment, handle tools, and take part in hands-on challenges while discovering two occupations that have since disappeared. It is a unique opportunity to appreciate the ingenuity, effort, and practical skills that once shaped everyday life.
