Rather than attempt to reproduce a semblance of a heritage building in this new construction, it was decided to build a contemporary annex that blends well with the main building. This approach was endorsed by the ministère de la Culture et des Communications and by Ville de Laval's Comité Consultatif d'Urbanisme.
This practice is not unusual in the field. Examples of other projects where this approach has been favoured can be found here. The volumetry of the annex became self-evident in order to meet operational needs: it was to house an elevator for accessibility and provide a new access point for groups. The architectural treatment of the annex is sober, so as not to compete with the house and to give it all the space it needs to shine brightly. It is also resolutely contemporary, a stylistic gesture that avoids mimicry and facilitates the reading of the building (allowing us to understand the phases of the house's construction).
However, the materials used for the extension were carefully selected by the architects to echo the house's original materials and traditional craftsmanship. For example, the cedar cladding of the traditional roof has been reinterpreted: the cedar, installed along the edge in vertical elements, forms a cladding all around the house, like a jewel box. The assembly methods are modern, but the annex respects the original spirit, notably through the choice of simple, neutral materials that blend in with the existing buildings.
The total capacity of the house is around one hundred people. Activities can also take place in the seasonal animation room (the former barn café) and on parts of the outdoor site (temporary marquee, picnic tables, outdoor exhibition, etc.).
A seasonal animation room in a restored former hangar is located a few steps from the house.
The site's outdoor facilities include an outdoor exhibition on Laval's agricultural heritage, picnic tables, a water fountain, and a 10-space parking lot, including one space reserved for people with disabilities.
Note that the former Grangerit theater is also located on the grounds but is not accessible for safety reasons.
No, the outdoor site is open free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but you must pay to visit the house and the exhibits.

The development of revenues will contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of activities that support the mission of maison André-Benjamin-Papineau.
A moderate price has been set to visit the exhibitions or take part in some of the activities on offer, in order to keep them accessible to as many people as possible. Please note that the outdoor site is accessible free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as are certain activities. What's more, to celebrate the opening of the house and Ville de Laval's 60th anniversary, access to the house and its two exhibitions is free until August 24, 2025.
Three small-scale rooms, accommodating 35 people, are available for rental to organizations and the general public : the seasonal animation room, the educational room, and the attic. For full details, contact us at mabp@reseauarthist.com.
